Anthony Joshua to face Alexander Povetkin

So the time is nearly upon us, our beloved Anthony Joshua is lacing up his gloves once again to face the “White Lion” Alexander Povetkin. Whilst the vast majority of spectators will count on an easy night for AJ, backed by the Joshua Vs Povetkin betting odds that have AJ an overwhelming favourite, those ‘in the know’ are predicting a much sterner test.

Joshua is coming off the back of an impressive points win against New Zealander Joseph Parker where he took Parker’s WBO Heavyweight strap. However looking at the recent standard of fighters AJ has fought, with the exception of Klitschko, Povetkin represents a bit of a step up.

Wins against fighters such as Molina, Breazeale, Takam and Charles Martin aren’t exactly impressive, none of these fighters are exactly challenging on a world level (or if they were/are, it’s by default) where as Povetkin has challenged himself against some really tricky opponents.

Povetkin has been in the ring with a number of fighters that others would shy away from due to them being unpredictable. In his latest fight he survived being rocked by David Price to come back and knock the Englishman to the canvas. In his 35 fight career he has only suffered one loss… to Wladamir Klitschko in 2013. Some would argue this would have been a much sterner test than the one AJ went through against the Ukrainian.

Prior to the fight with Povetkin, Klitschko was coming off the back of a 13 fight unbeaten run against some of the best in the world, when he fought AJ he was 4 years older and coming off the back of his defeat to Tyson Fury.

Even in his amateur career Povetkin wasn’t somebody to be messed with – throughout the entirety of his amateur career (132 fights) he only lost 7 fights. That might sound impressive but what’s even more impressive is that he avenged each one of those 7 losses to ensure he bested everyone he fought.

However this fight goes, just be assured that it’s not going to be the walk in the park everyone is expecting and, if he turns up on the night, Povetkin is going to give this fight a really good go.
